New Pool Construction

Construction work on the new pool facility has continued over the winter months and great progress continues to be made. Western Recreation has been busy building and assembling the components of the pool’s mechanical system off site in their shop and Parkside Construction has completed the construction of the new mechanical building for the facility. The new tot slide has also arrived for the pool and include stairs up to the slide along with a built-in tunnel. (see photos above). The overall construction progress continues to be on schedule and on budget, and crews are looking forward to warmer temperatures and upcoming project milestones.

The new washroom and shower building for the Boissevain Lions Campground has been constructed. This centrally located building within the campground includes universal and accessible/family washroom and shower units. Boissevain-Morton Swimming Pool is a key community facility for residents and visitors alike, providing structured programming and leisure opportunities.

The average life span of an outdoor pool is 29 years; currently the Boissevain Pool is 58 years old – built in 1965. Manitoba’s public health department declared 2022 was the final season of Boissevain Pool.

Initially, the proposed cost for a new pool was $2.2 million, which the Municipality of Boissevain-Morton was prepared to pay for, with no borrowing, over two years through General Reserves.

Originally, a phased approach to pool building and campground upgrades was planned, and was based on securing grant funding. Due to public health regulations, significant upgrades to the pool building are required prior to opening. To create space for these requirements, a stand alone mechanical building for the pool and new washroom/shower facilities for the campground are needed.

The Municipality has received funding through the province’s Building Sustainable Communities funding towards the new pool. As a requirement of the provincial funding, we must secure a non-municipal contribution, such as fundraising.

Due to the BSC requirements and additional costs, the Municipality of Boissevain-Morton and the Boissevain-Morton Parks and Recreation Board have begun fundraising.

We invite you to be a part of the new Boissevain-Morton Aquatic Centre! The new pool will be a major community attraction, bringing more people to Boissevain and contributing to our local economy.

Investing In Recreation Newsletter

DECEMBER 2021

Recreation and leisure opportunities are essential for our personal health and well-being, helping to build strong families and a healthy community. Boissevain-Morton’s recreation infrastructure is aging and is in need of investment for the benefit of our residents and our community as a whole.

Redevelopment Plan

Last spring, the Municipality completed its recreation master plan with HTFC Planning and Design. This process included a comprehensive review of recreation infrastructure, community needs, and future recreation needs. Based on the values and vision for community recreation, the redevelopment plan will guide and assist with future planning, investment, and delivery of recreation services in Boissevain-Morton.

Recreation Review

A committee comprised of council members and staff conducted a comprehensive review of the recreation department to identify how the Municipality could improve recreation service delivery to residents. The process included reviewing municipal recreation facilities, programming, budgeting, and organizational framework. The outcomes from the review include a new recreation by-law, board re-structuring, and increased staffing resources allocated to recreation service delivery.

New Arena

As a result of the Redevelopment Plan, a new location has been chosen for our local arena; it will be at the corner of Egan and South Railway. Although grant funding has yet to be secured, the Municipality will proceed with planning and fundraising initiatives due to the age and condition of the existing arena. Fundraising will begin shortly – stay tuned for details or contact Kara Paradis at 204-534-2433 or admin@boissevain.ca

Swimming Pool

The Boissevain-Morton Pool is the heartbeat of our community during the summer months and this past season experienced record high numbers. Due to its age and deteriorating condition, the pool is at the end of its lifespan and the Province of Manitoba has deemed 2022 will be its final season of operation. A new pool facility is in the works with construction to begin in the fall of 2022, with a planned opening in summer 2023. Funding has been secured and will not require any municipal borrowing.

Open House: Wednesday, March 16

A recreation public open house, originally scheduled for February 16, has been rescheduled to Wednesday, March 16. This is an opportunity to learn more about community recreation plans and share your feedback. Stay tuned for updates.
